The first National Conference on Geographical Studies (NCGS-1) was held on the 29th of April, 2005 at the National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (NISMED) Auditorium in the University of the Philippines Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. With the theme “Mitigating Natural Disasters in the Philippines,” this inaugural conference aimed to promote the discipline of geography in the broader context of environmental and social sciences. By choosing a universal theme such as natural disasters, the conference was intended to promote geography as a holistic science and put forth the discipline at the forefront of hazards and disaster research.
